How does good oral health affect disease prevention?
Having good oral health definitely affects the body as a whole. For example, if your mouth hurts, your whole body can feel bad too. In addition, research has shown that having good oral health can prevent various diseases from occurring. According to the Academy of General Dentistry having bad oral care can lead to an increased risk or stroke and heart disease. Diseases caused by bad oral care are diabetes, leukemia, pancreatic cancer, heart disease, and kidney disease.
Other causes of health problems include:
Digestion problems: Since digestion starts with chemical processes in the mouth it can cause problems in the intestines. Thus digestive problems such as, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), intestinal problems, and other digestive disorders can begin to develop when one does not take proper care of their oral health.
Gingivitis: Another oral problem that could be caused by not taking care of one's teeth is gingivitis. It is an advanced gum disease that is now affecting more than 75% of the U.S. population.
